A British cancer victim claims he was being \u201csystematically murdered by negligence and medical inexperience\u201d while locked up in a Dubai prison for carrying \u201ctoo much\u201d of his prescribed medicine.<\/p>\n

Perry Coppins, 61, was arrested in Dubai in November on the charge of possession and intent to use controlled drugs. He was only released and allowed to return to the UK last week.<\/p>\n

The drugs were confiscated from Coppins despite his dependence on the pills in treating his Tourette syndrome, which he was diagnosed 21 years ago.<\/p>\n

Maritime security officer, Coppins told RT the \u201cwithdrawal almost cost my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Describing the fierceness of his symptoms, he said: \u201cI went into a fever, I was sweating and woke up blind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bent double by gastroenteritis, a symptom of the disease, he added: \u201cI actually knew I was dying. I was totally convinced I wasn\u2019t going to make it back to England.\u201d<\/p>\n

His condition was compounded by the cancer, which meant he \u201ccouldn\u2019t even urinate.\u201d His \u201cagony\u201d meant he was unable to walk.<\/p>\n

Once fellow inmates brought Coppins\u2019 condition to the guards\u2019 attention, he was finally brought to hospital, where an urologist confirmed the tumor originally diagnosed in the UK three years ago.<\/p>\n

But despite a local doctor confirming the medicines were vital to his patient, Coppins claims \u201cnone of the treatment was carried on in prison,\u201d and that he was back to square one as soon as he was returned behind the \u201clocked, steel door\u201d of his cell.<\/p>\n

He was kept in \u201cbarbaric\u201d conditions, Coppins said, as he and fellow inmates were forced to eat off the concrete floor, gobbling the food with their hands and on top of plastic bags as the facility lacked cutlery and table cloths.<\/p>\n

He claimed the prison was like a \u201cracket,\u201d where you had to pay an extortionate price for cigarettes and a sandwich.<\/p>\n

That often left inmates in a starving condition, given the food provided by the detention center \u201cwouldn\u2019t sustain lives,\u201d Coppins claims.<\/p>\n
