As Floridians brace for the impending onslaught from Hurricane Irma, some residents have come up with novel ways of \u201cscaring off\u201d the monster storm, forcing police to issue a warning not to shoot at the hurricane.<\/p>\n

It all started with the Facebook Event \u2018Shoot at Hurricane Irma\u2019, scheduled for 10am local time on Sunday. \u201cLet\u2019s show Irma that we shoot first,\u201d the event\u2019s description reads.<\/p>\n

The prospect of firing rounds at the threatening storm seemed to strike a chord with many, and the event quickly garnered thousands of \u201cattendees.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time of writing, over 25,000 people have said they will \u201cattend,\u201d while another 53,000 have marked themselves down as \u201cinterested.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event was created by 22-year-old Ryon Edwards, who\u00a0told the BBC\u00a0he set it up due to\u00a0\u201ca combination of stress and boredom.\u201d<\/p>\n

“The response is a complete and total surprise to me,\u201d\u00a0Edwards added.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never envisioned this event becoming some kind of crazy idea larger than myself. It has become something a little out of my control.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event page quickly became flooded with memes enthusiastically endorsing the idea and even instructions on how to shoot a hurricane.<\/p>\n

All this activity prompted the Pasco County Sheriff\u2019s office to issue a warning not to shoot at Irma.\u00a0\u201cYou won\u2019t make it turn around & it will have very dangerous side effects,\u201d\u00a0the police department noted.<\/p>\n

The popularity of the \u2018Shoot at Hurricane Irma\u2019 phenomenon sparked a series of similar events, including\u00a0\u2018Flame Throwing Hurricane Irma\u2019\u00a0and\u00a0\u2018Sing “All Star” by Smashmouth So Loud the Soundwaves Turn Irma Away\u2019.<\/p>\n

Recognising the interest in their ‘don’t shoot’ plea, the Pasco County Sheriff\u2019s office followed up their warning with a call-out for volunteers to help out at emergency accommodation for people affected by Irma.<\/p>\n
