Cutting Earth’s population in half is the best path to a sustainable future, new study claims
A new peer-reviewed study argues that one of the most effective long-term paths toward environmental sustainability would be a gradual reduction in Earth’s population from about 8.3 billion today to around 4 billion by the year 2200.
The study, published in the journal Sustainable Development, does not propose coercive population control. Instead, the authors argue that the transition could occur voluntarily through greater access to education, improved reproductive healthcare, and increased opportunities for women around the world.
The idea is based on a trend already seen in many countries.
