1. The medical diagnosis is done first and foremost with a good questionnaire and, ideally, with a very good physical examination. More than 90% of the times this is enough and no tests are necessary.
If several diagnoses are possible (differential diagnosis) tests (radiology or blood)…, are the most common to exclude erroneous diagnoses. Certain tests which are more specific confirm the diagnosis.
2. In psychiatry, there are very specific criteria for diagnosing mental illness. This is not done randomly.
3. All mental illnesses do not respond identically to treatment. For schizophrenia, medication gives excellent results, as well as for bipolar disease; for depression, it is often necessary to make life changes and changes in the way of thinking. Anti-depressants alone are less effective if there are no such changes.
4. Are these psychotropic drugs a panacea? Absolutely not, and science is progressing to find other avenues and we have to work with what current science offers us.
5. Do doctors prescribe these types of medications too quickly? Yes, it is obvious… and often… without asking questions. It is not the inefficiency of the treatments which is in question, but the incompetence of some doctors.
6. Do pharmaceutical companies want to make money? YES, and good doctors do not get dragged into it.”
